Migratory birds need healthy and diverse habitats along their flight routes (flyways) so that they can breed and raise their young every spring and leave for better food sources and optimal climates every fall. In eastern Canada, these birds travel along the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways that reach from Patagonia in South America to Canada’s Arctic. Ensuring safe travels along these routes helps these birds to survive and thrive.
The flyways are flight routes that birds follow on their spring and fall migrations. Habitats along these routes provide resting, feeding and breeding sites for birds. Habitat connectivity along the way is essential for these birds to survive and thrive. International governments collaborate on a continental scale, through programs like the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, to help conserve habitat availability along the flyway routes.
