Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (EHJV) partners conserve important habitat for birds and other wildlife in Canada’s six eastern provinces. A Joint Venture is a cooperative regional partnership among organizations, and the EHJV is one of many under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan which all rely on sound science and collaboration to conserve high-priority wetland and associated upland habitat for birds.
The EHJV area stretches across one third of Canada’s land mass and includes 30% of the country’s wetlands (48 million hectares), with 65% of the Canadian population residing within its boundaries.
The EHJV is a partnership of the federal government (Environment and Climate Change Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service), the eastern provincial governments (Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador) and four environmental non-governmental organizations. Each province has a Steering Committee that guides conservation planning and implementation.
Environment and Climate Change Canada funds the coordination of the EHJV and other funding is provided through federal and provincial governments in Canada, federal and state governments in the United States, and industry and non-governmental partners in both countries.
The EHJV partnership has worked to secure and restore wetlands and associated upland habitats since the 1980s. Though the EHJV partnership became official in 1989, ‘first-step’ projects began between 1986 and 1988. These set the stage for larger projects and are included in the overall EHJV accomplishments.
Landscapes that support stable bird populations while providing ecological and economic benefits to society.
To provide a forum where federal, provincial and non-governmental agencies work collaboratively to coordinate and deliver effective bird habitat conservation in eastern Canada.
To conserve migratory and non-migratory birds in priority habitats for the benefit of biodiversity and people.
The EHJV Implementation Plan 2021-2030 reflects the direction and priorities of the 2018 NAWMP Update: Connecting People, Waterfowl, and Wetlands. These priorities are birds, habitat and people.
